As we left, we saw a small building with its name on it and pulled into the driveway.
This museum is new, and they are just growing their collections. What we saw was fascinating. It primarily focused on several African-American families with many generations in and around Springfield. Some of the stories were very informative, and we learned a lot, most of which we should have learned in school. This is one of the reasons I like museums like this. Rather than bland education painting a pollyannaish picture of our history, these museums show how minorities were treated (or mistreated). It preserves a part of our history that many would like to forget or gloss over. But without information like this, history is destined to repeat.
Why four stars and not five? This has to do with the current state of the museum - essentially just starting up. They dont have a lot of items yet. They just received a large grant and are expanding the museum. They are soliciting additional items, most of which were donated. We were so impressed we bought a family membership, even though we live almost four hours away. Once they complete their new wing, were taking a trip back.
Incidentally, if you do go for a visit, their Executive Director is amazing. She gave us the tour, and we learned a lot. If you are even in Springfield, IL, I recommend stopping here before or after Lincolns tomb. Since the museum is small, seeing everything takes little time. But it is well worth stopping for. Take advantage of this informative museum that tells some tragic and happy stories.
Loud Thunder Forest Preserve - Illinois City Zana Switzer: Loud Thunder Forest Preserve has always been a beautiful spot, but experiencing it through the Loud Thunder 50 Trail Run gave me an entirely new appreciation for it. There are four separate campgrounds, each offering something different, but the main one—with a playground for families—is a great choice. The hiking trails are plentiful, though some were closed due to a controlled burn when we visited (totally understandable for the health of the forest). Lake George adds another layer of adventure, offering canoeing, kayaking, and paddle boating.
The Loud Thunder 50, hosted by Sun Trail Running, was incredible. It was a cup-less, leave-no-trace race, which meant that everyone respected the park and kept it pristine. That kind of commitment to sustainability made the whole experience even better. And we seriously lucked out—the weather could not have been more perfect. It honestly felt like we runners helped shape the trails for the upcoming season.
Camping was available for the race weekend with a two-night minimum stay, and there was plenty of space, including spots right near the Start/Finish line. That setup was a game-changer. Families could hang out at their campsites and still easily cheer for their runners instead of feeling like they needed to stay near the aid stations. It made the whole event feel relaxed, welcoming, and truly special.
Loud Thunder Forest Preserve is a fantastic spot for anyone who loves the outdoors. The well-kept trails, peaceful lake, and spacious campgrounds make it a great place to hike, paddle, and relax in nature. The Loud Thunder 50 was an unforgettable experience—Sun Trail Running did an amazing job organizing a sustainable, community-driven race, and the setup made it easy for families to support their runners. Between the perfect weather, the welcoming atmosphere, and the chance to rediscover a place filled with childhood memories, this visit was truly special. We’ll be back, no question!
Waterloo Park District - Waterloo Grace Lichtenberg: Some boys are not on scooters or skate boards. They are on battery motor bikes. I have young grandbabies who are too nervous to enjoy the skate park.
Peterstown House - Waterloo Mark Zeman: An exceptionally well preserved historic home for a smaller town. Saved from demolition through the efforts of local citizens, the home has a rich and interesting history. It houses artifacts donated by locals that provide historical flavor and context, and the docent was very knowledgable and related their relevance. Very refreshing!
Monroe County History Museum - Mark Zeman: This museum showcases local artifacts with an emphasis on wagons, equestrian gear (bridles, saddles, tack) and a few antique vehicles. Its quite surprising to find such an extensive collection. They also have an actual storefront of a general store with representative goods. Interesting!
Illinois Caverns State Natural Area - Waterloo Steve Melville: Very cool. Lots of great formations. You are going to be wet and dirty but it’s very doable for most. Self guided, minimum of 4 ppl, 3 sources of light each and a helmet (it’s a must). We went in about 1.5 miles (back out 1.5 miles) plus exploring in about 5 hours.
Schorr Lake Vineyards & Winery - Waterloo Callum Lewis-Smith: Great atmosphere! Lots of seating and the wine was very good. Also lots of options for those who are not wine purists. So there is something for pretty much everybody! Would thoroughly recommend!
