06-2025 Bannon Mini Park in Hight rate 15 location for tourist in Champaign, IL, USA (part 2)Carle Park - Urbana Beia Spiller: What a beautiful park! Huge, with wonderful trees all over. A dedicated space for the playground, the rest of the park is wonderful and open. So much lush green and so many flowers. Love love love!!
Leal Park - Urbana George Clasey: I have not been to this park. On my search of my family history it
is believed that my great grandfather was buried there in 1880-1881 time frame and no knowledge that he was moved when the Leal Park cemetery was convert to a city park and the grave marker/head stones were buried on top of the grave 2 feet under the surface. Anyone having more information on this I would be interested in hearing from you.
Robert C. Porter Family Park - Champaign Averee: A nice huge park near the dog park, with a lot of biking and walking paths, and beautiful lakes to fish in or look at. There are also looking put spots, and at the center there is play equipment with cool structures and slides, plus a bike rack, a bridge, benches, grassy spaces, etc. It is in a bit of an isolated location, though you could also see this as peaceful really. Has cool bridges and good for the whole family, including dogs. Also has shady spots with cool picnic locations. In weird location near to sewage plant as previously noted sort of
Robeson Park - Champaign Kyla Threlfall Brown: Great park! A larger and smaller playground, swings, and zip line. Right next to a walking path and a large field with trees. Not a lot of parking space.
Mayfair Park - Champaign Dan Tharp: This is a great little park for families and kids....theres even a sandbox area with a slew of toys already there, which is something Ive never seen in a public park before.
Bian Park - Champaign Sharon Flora: Lovely quiet tree filled park. Great for picnics replete with several tables!
Boneyard Creek Second Street Basin - Champaign Angelena Shelton: This park is smaller in size but located in the center of the city. If you enjoy attracting large numbers of geese, this is the perfect spot. However, be prepared for a potentially high amount of geese droppings on the sidewalks. While there are more romantic places to visit, having any kind of park nearby is always a pleasant convenience.
Zahnd Park - Champaign Joe Krehbiel: This park has one of the nicest Little League baseball fields in C-U but that’s about all this park is good for. There is also a Pony League baseball field that is closed to the public. They also have a playground designed for 2-5 year olds and a football field. The park is well maintained but very boring overall- no trees, trails, or interesting features.
Ambucs Park - C R: Review written 12/27/2024. Nice park to walk or park your car and relax etc. Usually has a portapotty open in winter when the facility bathrooms close for winter.
Has accessible playground area for people with physical disabilities.
Has some covered areas with picnic tables
Has a bridge to walk over and some benches and playground equipment
Downsides are it’s right next to the like sewage or wastewater or something treatment plant and sometimes the park smells bad.
Also a downside is that sometimes depending on the weather and wind conditions, you can hear some kind of shooting training going on maybe from the Champaign county jail area nearby. It’s not very pleasant to go to a park and hear tons of gunshots off in the distance and I wish these practice times would be broadcast more to the public as to not startle people with PTSD etc. Maybe they are broadcast on police social media pages or something idk but it can definitely be startling.
Also a downside is that some of the areas you can drive turn into gravel and become super muddy and have some deep dangerous potholes and end in a dead end but there’s no warning signs about how it’s a dead end so if you drive that way to try to see more areas of the park, you may have to back out
