Decatur Transfer House - Decatur T RS: Very nicely restored and well maintained history piece !
It takes you back in the history. The real timeline pictures displayed around house (can also be viewed from outside the house) are very refreshing the history and demonstrate the Decatur as an industrial hub !
Its located in the heart of downtown. Sufficient parking places available around the house.
A water fountain, a small garden and enough benches in front of this house give the opportunity to rest and feel the history!
Childrens Museum of Illinois - Decatur Liz “Liz”: An Amazing Experience at the Children’s Museum of Illinois – A Hidden Gem for Families!
Our visit to the Children’s Museum of Illinois in Decatur was absolutely incredible, and I can’t recommend this place enough for families looking for a fun and educational experience. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted by a world of hands-on exhibits, interactive activities, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere that made the experience truly unforgettable.
As a family, we’ve visited many museums over the years, but this one really stood out. There was something for everyone, not just my kids, but for me as well. From imaginative play areas to educational exhibits, every corner of the museum was filled with opportunities to learn and grow. My kids were absolutely enthralled by the hands-on exhibits where they could explore everything from art and science to construction and even water activities. It was amazing to see their faces light up as they engaged with each interactive display, from building structures to experimenting with physics. It was so much fun to watch them discover new things in such an engaging and playful way.
What truly made this experience even better was the fact that the museum wasn’t crowded. As someone who’s used to visiting bigger cities, where everything is typically packed with people, it was such a relief to be in a more intimate, calm setting. It made the entire experience feel much more personal and allowed my family to fully enjoy the exhibits without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
Being from a big city, it was also refreshing to visit a small, charming town like Decatur. There’s something so peaceful about taking a break from the hustle and bustle, and the Children’s Museum provided the perfect escape. The museum’s layout was easy to navigate, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, making our visit smooth and enjoyable from start to finish.
Whether you’re a local or just passing through, I highly recommend checking out the Children’s Museum of Illinois. It’s a perfect place to bond with your family, create lasting memories, and let your children explore and learn in a fun, stress-free environment. The museum offers so many engaging and educational activities that both kids and adults can enjoy. It’s an experience that will leave you wanting to return again and again.
We had such an incredible time, and I can’t wait to go back. If you’re in the area or even if you’re just visiting, don’t miss out on this hidden gem in Decatur. Trust me – it’s worth the trip!
Scovill Zoo - Decatur Alicia Arroyo: We go a few times every year. The kids absolutely love this! I’ve been taking my daughter since she was the age of two and she is seven now. I would say this is perfect for a two hour visit. Good for ages toddler to about 10 years old. It gets better every year. My kids were excited to see the mountain lions. It was a nice addition to the zoo. Also the reptile room is a nice improvement over the past few years.
After the zoo, we always go to the park right outside the zoo. The kids will play there for another hour or so. We also tried to do the train ride and the carousel most visits.
Rock Springs Conservation Area - Decatur Sarah B: What a gem for the community! I love that they are actively fighting to preserve thousands of acres but are also teaching and utilizing their facility as a community gathering place.
Nelson Park - Decatur T RS: On contrary to the expectations, the lakeshore adjacent to the park, didnt seem to be active at the time of our visit, on a national holiday!
A small walking trail, benches and a Pavilion but mostly covered with ducks and their reliefs! Maintenance could be better !
The memorial for the 9/11 twin tower is very patriotic and commendable. Kudos to the artist!
The private boating activities were kind of busy !
The Ambitheater seemed impressive though !
Governor Oglesby Mansion Inc - Decatur Stacey Jansen: 1st visit to this lovely house during an open house event for the holiday season! It was a great experience and an awesome learning experience.
Sand Creek Conservation Area - Decatur Zombro Jeremy: I just moved to South Shores and this place is right down the street! The trails are clean, well kept, and there are maps of the trails. There is a HUGE 5 mile or so loop, but its kind of dissected into a few small ones in case you want to cut it short. There is also a creek that runs through and you may have to backtrack from time to time, or take off the socks and shoes and go for it! Perfect place to relax and just be in nature, it was an immediate favorite and Ive already made it a daily go to, weather permitting. Peanutbutler80 tiktok
