The tour is completely free, which makes it a fantastic stop for history lovers of all ages. Just keep in mind that while the tour doesn’t cost anything, you will need to pay for parking nearby. If you’re ever in Springfield, this is an absolute must-visit. It’s a wonderful opportunity to step back in time and see where Lincoln lived while shaping his remarkable legacy!

5 /5 Richard Torbett: This is worth the time to visit and explore. Four blocks around President Lincolns home have been restored back to what they looked like in 1860. The park service has done a great job of preserving this area and giving visitors a glimpse of Springfield in 1860.

5 /5 Chris Wyatt: My family and I discovered this national historic site quite by accident while stopping to visit the state capitol. The staff at the visitor center was nice and friendly. We did not have time to stay for any of the presentations or the guided tour which is free. However, we did walk the grounds and the site is well maintained and very informational. Would definitely recommend for anybody interested in American history or President Lincoln.

5 /5 Federico Salvati: Great historic attraction managed by the National Parks Service. We stopped here during our Route 66 road trip in 2022 and it was a beautiful experience. We visited President Lincolns home with a ranger guide, who explained with passion the history and curiosities of the place. If you are in Springfield I recommend to make a stop here. Of course the site is part of the NPS annual card, so admittance is free for those who have it.

Twelve Oaks Vineyard - Carlyle

Julie Burt: I cannot say enough about this hidden gem, we found it just being out of for a drive. The staff are super friendly and nothing is any trouble to them. We had the wine flight and then the Blueberry Slushies which were delicious. We bought a few bottles of wine and the Veterans Tribute Wines are amazing and a portion of the proceeds goes towards the Veterans Memorial Hospital in Illinois. We enjoyed a beautiful sunny day with live music and good people.

Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area - Carlyle

Kerrie Dewey: Just want to mention first that there is no water hook up here. Besides that down fall this is a good camp ground for families. There are multiple parks, a pool, a small store, and trails for walking or hiking. Showers and restrooms are nice and clean, the water in the showers is nice and hot. Volleyball and basketball courts add to the list of family activities. Please drive slow and be alert, children and their toys or bikes are bond to be anywhere! For $20 a night you really cant ask for more and the lake is beautiful with multiple beaches and boat ramps.

Woodyard Conservation Area - Charleston

Paula Vaske: Charleston is blessed to have such a nice hiking area. There are multiple trails for different hiking levels. I wouldnt describe any of the trails being higher than a moderate level. The only criticism I have is that the trails arent always clearly marked. I took the red trail all away around the lake. And although I understood the direction of the trail, there were multiple intersections that I was uncertain of. The trail was very clean and well kept.

Lincoln Douglas Debate Museum - Charleston

Jennifer Munoz: We were very excited to visit the Lincoln Douglas, Debate museum and we were not disappointed. The museum is very nicely spread out. It was a self guided tour. It was very clean on the inside and the outside. It was very easy access in and out of the museum, there’s also bathrooms on the outside of the museum. Make sure you look it sits inside of the fairground so that you don’t miss it.

Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site - Lerna

Marc Crawford: Very cool place of history to visit if you are in the area. Nice visitor center with a great museum. There is a 14 minute video you can watch before you walk around the property. Some things might be reconstructed, but it is still cool to visit. There were baby sheep there while we visited. It is all free to visit, so it is worth it if you are in the area.
